Three Generations and Going Strong
For three generations, the Hirschman family has been providing quality products at competitive prices with service that is second to none. Currently located in Reese, Michigan, the business originated in 1934 when Charles Hirschman started as an agent for the Standard Oil Co., providing rural mid-Michigan residents with a wide array of Standard Oil products, including kerosene for home heating. In 1967 the second generation - Donald Hirschman - took over the business, following in his father's footsteps. He continued to provide the same quality products and services for which the Hirschman name was known.
In 1976, Amoco Oil Co. (formerly Standard Oil Co.) sold its local assets and operations to its current agents and Hirschman Oil Supply, inc. was born. With expansion in mind and looking toward the future, Donald opened Hirschman's Petro Depot in 1984. At the time of its opening, it was one of the first unattended, card operated fueling sites in Michigan.
Mark Hirschman, the third generation, joined the business in 1992. Wanting to keep pace with the ever-changing rural home heat market, Mark expanded the busines and formed Hirschman Propane in 1994. Today, both Hirschman Oil Supply and Hirschman Propane continue to experience growth and success in mid-Michigan.
Hirschman Propane has 10 well-trained, quality employees who have comprehensive company and industry knowledge, servicing approximately 1,300 customers. Its two delivery trucks and transport truck move over 1.4 million gallons of propane yearly, delivering propane to residential, agricultural and commerical accounts across four counties of mid-Michigan: Tuscola, Saginaw, Bay and Midland. Mark's goal from the beginning has been to grow at a manageable, sustainable and affordable rate. He looks forward to continued growth in the industry.
Mark believes that local ownership, quality employees and community involvement are what makes Hirschman Propane unique to the industry. Employees are able to treat each customer as a name rather than a number and are encouraged to get to know the cusotmer. For Mark, one of the most enjoyable aspects of day-to-day operations is hearing stories about his father and Grandpa Charlie from the customers his family has taken care of for decades.
From 1934 to 2005, the Hirschman business philosophy has remained the same: Treat others as you would like yourself to be treated, always be truthful and ethical, and treat all customers equally and fairly.
The Hirschman family businesses have been keeping its neighbors warm for more than 70 years! Through each generation, pride has been taken in providing the mid-Michigan area products and services that are of high quality and competitively priced. Their neighbors have known and appreciated their personal service for decades!
